In Shorty Gordon, the Germans got more than they had bargained for. Shorty was known throughout the 305th as a hellion. Curtis LeMay, General U.S. Air Force later said, “His sins were as scarlet, but never quite deserving of capital punishment.” He was “busted” to private nearly every time he had any leisure to get into trouble, but was always promoted before each new mission, in case he were shot down and taken prisoner. As an NCO, he would beget better treatment from the Germans.
